Frequently Asked Questions
Switching, citing, BibTeX, plans, and billing. Can’t find what you need? Email support@citegeist.io.
I use a different reference manager. How easy is it to switch?
Export your library as a .bib file, drop it in, and CiteGeist takes care of the rest. Existing records are linked so current and future papers stay associated, and duplicates are handled automatically. For step-by-step export help, see the Zotero and EndNote export guide.
How do I set up citation insertion in Word, Overleaf, and Google Docs?
Connect your CiteGeist library and use the Word add-in to insert and format citations from your synced library. For Overleaf, export or sync BibTeX and cite entries in LaTeX as you write. Google Docs and direct Overleaf integrations are coming soon. See the full citation guide.
Can I switch plans any time?
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade whenever you like. Changes take effect at the end of your current billing period.
What happens if I exceed my reference limit?
Phantom users are prompted to upgrade to Poltergeist. Your data is always safe, and upgrading takes a single click.
What if a reference doesn’t populate automatically?
Paste the BibTeX directly into the PDF viewer. Every citation format then populates from that entry, and all fields stay editable.
How do I get a BibTeX entry from Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, or a journal?
Google Scholar: search for the paper, select the Cite icon below the result, then choose BibTeX.
Semantic Scholar: open the paper page, select Export or Cite, and choose BibTeX.
Journal or publisher page: look for Cite, Export Citation, or Download Citation. Most publishers, including ACM, IEEE, Springer, and Elsevier, offer BibTeX directly.
The result looks like this, and you can paste it straight into CiteGeist:
@article{blakeman2025nvidia,
title={NVIDIA Nemotron 3: Efficient and Open Intelligence},
author={Blakeman, Aaron and Grattafiori, Aaron and Basant, Aarti and Gupta, Abhibha
and Khattar, Abhinav and Renduchintala, Adi and others},
journal={arXiv preprint arXiv:2512.20856},
year={2025}
}Which BibTeX entry types should I use?
Using the right type makes citation styles render correctly. The common ones are @article for journal articles, @book, @inproceedings for conference papers, @incollection for book chapters, @misc for datasets, software, and preprints, @online for web pages, @phdthesis and @mastersthesis, @techreport, and @unpublished.
For required fields and a full example of each, see the BibTeX formatting guide.
What if Related Works is empty?
CiteGeist needs enough BibTeX metadata to identify related papers. Add keywords and the paper’s BibTeX entry, then select Refresh in the Related Works area to run discovery again.
Does CiteGeist support iPad and stylus workflows?
Yes. Annotate and write handwritten notes with Apple Pencil or an equivalent stylus, and your markup stays organized in your library.
What payment methods do you accept?
All major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) and PayPal. For institutional plans we can arrange invoicing.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Any time, with no penalties. Access continues until the end of your billing period, and you can export all of your data.
Where can I find your terms and policies?
Read the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. By creating an account you accept both.
